Lecture series TRACES - Transdisciplinary Center for Exhibition Studies
It is not only collectors, dealers, experts and museum directors who are increasingly affected by art forgeries, but also the artists whose works are fraudulently imitated. How do they themselves deal with the issue? They usually try to defend themselves against the forgers. But sometimes they accept the forgeries retrospectively or reflect the fraud in an artistic way. Some artists even actively act as forgers of their own or other people's works. Some, on the other hand, indulge in a rather humorous fraud at the expense of the art world. In his lecture, the art historian and forgery expert Hubertus Butin from Berlin will shed light on the many different ways in which artists deal with forgeries.
Hubertus Butin is an art historian, publicist and curator. He studied in Bonn and Zurich and has worked in Gerhard Richter's studio and as a guest curator for international museums. He has published numerous texts on contemporary art and art theory, including a lexicon on contemporary art and the catalog raisonné of Richter editions. Butin works as an expert for Richter works and writes for the FAZ. He has worked as an author and catalog writer for renowned museums worldwide.
