Research and teaching in the department of Art and Knowledge operate at the interface between art history and aesthetics, architectural history and theory, and intellectual history. Historically it covers the period from the eighteenth century to the present, taking a decidedly global perspective on art, architecture, and knowledge.
The focus is particularly on practices and forms of exhibition, which are examined in their historical depth, specific materiality, spatiality, and social function. The fields of art and knowledge are not viewed separately here, but in a dialectical relation. Indeed, researching exhibitions allows us to see the different knowledge practices that “art” makes possible in the first place, and conversely, how artistic, curatorial, and architectural practices themselves can be understood as “knowledge.”
