The Kunsthochschule Kassel confers the academic degree of doctor of philosophy (Dr. phil.) after successful completion of the doctoral process in the academic departments Art History and Aesthetics, Art Education, and Design Sciences. The basis for being accepted at the Kunsthochschule as a doctoral candidate is a relevant degree in academic studies in the areas of Art History and Aesthetics, Art Education, or Design Sciences, or in related fields. In case of doubt, the Doctoral Committee at the Kunsthochschule will examine, on the basis of a written statement by the advisor, whether the area in question can be considered related and can fulfill the requirements for acceptance into the field in question.
In the absence of a qualifying degree, the Doctoral Committee may conduct an aptitude examination. In the document “Besonderen Bestimmungen für Promotionen an der Kunsthochschule” [Special Provisions for Doctorates at the Kunsthochschule], revised in 2023, it was determined that the aptitude assessment procedure would be conducted on the basis of written application documents. The aptitude examination takes place according to the examination regulations of each department, and graded coursework and examinations must be submitted. In general the requirement for examination results is 60 credits. The type and extent of the required coursework and examination results is determined by the Doctoral Committee and communicated to the applicant. In case of doubt, the Doctoral Committee may request a statement from the supervisor about the qualifications of the applicant for a doctorate in the intended field of study.
The Allgemeinen Bestimmungen für Promotionen an der Universität Kassel govern the procedures of granting doctorate degrees at the University of Kassel. The Kunsthochschule is also bound by the Neufassung (14.07.2023) der Besonderen Bestimmungen für Promotionen an der Kunsthochschule Kassel der Universität Kassel zu den Allgemeinen Bestimmungen für Promotionen an der Universität Kassel (AB-PromO) vom 14.07.2021.
