The documenta Institute is an independent, non-university research institute with international standards, dedicated to the multifaceted history and present of documenta in the context of global art. The documenta is not the sole object of research, but the starting point for reflecting on far-reaching questions in the field of contemporary art and exhibition history in its social context.
The three subject areas of the documenta Institute "Art and Society" (Prof. Dr. Liliana Gómez), "Art and Economies" (Prof. Dr. Mi You) and "Art and Knowledge" (Prof. Dr. Felix Vogel) are based at the Kunsthochschule with a secondary membership. The courses are open to all students and the professors and research assistants in the three subject areas are authorized to conduct examinations. The professors can also supervise doctorates at the Kunsthochschule.
