Beauty salon @ Urania: Stone Age beauties everywhere

Panel discussion - Barbie and Ken, trad wives and alpha males: social media propagates old gender stereotypes. Is this the aesthetic of the political backlash? Alice Hasters and Daniel Hornuff with Rabea Weihser.

In Urania's monthly "Beauty Salon", cultural journalist Rabea Weihser explores the most diverse perspectives on beauty with her guests. This time, we wonder together about the return of gender stereotypes: why is an aesthetic ideal that shows men like Tarzan and women like Jane becoming entrenched on social media? Six-packs and hard chins here, thick lips and small noses there - just when gender roles were becoming a little more flexible. Are the Instagram face, the Looksmaxxing trend, the hype surrounding trad wives and alpha males an expression of the vibe shift? We talk about this with author Alice Hasters and cultural scientist Daniel Hornuff (Professor of Theory and Practice of Design, Kunsthochschule Kassel). In their journalistic work, both deal with aesthetic and political levels of meaning of gender roles. This second beauty salon will be an entertaining and enlightening evening about archaic ideals, biological conservatism and the faces of the future.
