German Design Graduates 2025

"Dare to Design -Spaces of Care" presents the year's best graduation projects.

What happens when design gets involved? What role does it play between democratic erosion and ecological crises? From September 4 to October 12, the German Design Graduates initiative, sponsored by the German Design Council, is presenting the annual exhibition "Dare to Design - Spaces of Care" at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln (MAKK).

45 projects and concepts by young design talents are dedicated to the pressing questions and socio-political challenges of the present. In their diversity, the final projects reflect the innovative power of design. Beyond the classic concept of design and pure form, they invite a discourse on an expanded understanding of the discipline: Design as a collective practice and as an act of caring.

The Kunsthochschule Kassel is part of this year's edition of German Design Graduates: Milan Stein (Product Design).

Holobiont
Microalgae and microbial symbiosis - a concept for more resilient urban ecosystems

Holobiont investigates the potential of microalgae as a recyclable bioresource and focuses on the invisible but fundamental interactions between microbes, roots and plants in urban ecosystems. A self-sufficient photobioreactor for the location-independent cultivation and harvesting of microalgae at the place of use is at the heart of the concept. Microalgae contain valuable nutrients and phytohormones which, as natural soil additives, promote plant health, strengthen biodiversity, neutralize pollutants and increase the regenerative capacity of urban ecosystems. The design concept shows how microalgae can be integrated into biological processes within the city to make urban ecosystems more resilient to increasing environmental stresses such as heat, drought and pollutants. The object is made of durable mono-materials and designed in such a way that all raw materials can be returned to their raw material cycles.
