The material taught in this subject area is primarily the history of European and non-European art in the period from 1700-1900. In addition, the teaching not only takes visual art into consideration, but also the history of architecture, urban planning, and art exhibition from the early modern era into the 20th century. Cooperations within the Kunsthochschule and with subject areas at the university put particular focus on an openness to perspectives on historical research that are oriented to questions of the present.
One particular focus of the research in this subject area is the history of painting and graphic art in the 18th and 19th centuries. Alongside the major European countries, in particular France, Great Britain, and Germany, attention is paid to contact zones with other cultures. A second research interest lies in the history of the institution of the museum from its formative phase in the 18th century until the present. The focus here is above all on the historical transformation of art exhibition practices–with particular consideration for developments in the 20th century.
