Subject Area Classical Modernism and Contemporary Art

This subject area is continually dedicated to the entire breadth and depth of the developments in art during the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition, the area offers regular events that take up particular questions (for instance digitization in art and art history, methodology critique, institutional and exhibition history). The integration of digital technologies into the teaching, in cooperation with the Software Engineering Research Group at the University of Kassel, is the first of its kind at a German academic art institute. Thematically the teaching seeks out links to research and product development (exhibition, publication, VR reconstruction) and thus to professional orientation.

The focus of research is on the art of the classical avant-garde, contemporary art, and the theory and practice of curating. Not only is the previous curatorial work of the department heads of great relevance here, but also externally financed research and development projects. Science-based virtual reconstructions of historical and contemporary exhibitions will also represent a central field of activity in the subject area in the future.
