In her painting practice, the artist monia pieniążek examines the role of protest photography as a carrier of emotional messages that leave traces and shape our perception of history and the present. She sees images as a key to stored information and a means of capturing our reality. The events of the protests in particular are not only described by the images, but also created. Based on the material found in archives and social media, the artist searches for a painterly translation of the protest images that allows for a form of dialog between figuration and abstraction and raises the question of self-positioning or distancing. Painting becomes a means of approaching wounded histories and resistant narratives. She is particularly interested in feminist perspectives and the protests against the tightening of abortion rights in Poland.
