Final presentation of the cooperation project between students from the École supérieure d'art Pays Basque (ESAPB) and the Film and Moving Image specialization at the Kunsthochschule Kassel.
The starting point for the project was two cans of 16mm film found by chance that were shot in Biarritz and Bayonne in the 1940s. The labeling on the film cans suggested that the material was filmed by members of the German Wehrmacht. Following an excursion to Bayonne and Biarritz, during which students from both universities viewed this material together and visited and re-filmed some of the locations, the students are now responding to the archive recordings with audiovisual works. They examine concepts such as memory, archive, document, excavation, place, representation, change and historiography and also address the questions of how found film material can be brought into a dialog with contemporary images and how it is possible to react to a past of which initially only images are available without context or explanations of their creation.
This project is supported by the OFAJ/DFJW – Office Franco-Allemand pour la Jeunesse / Deutsch-Französisches Jugendwerk.
