Johannes Kastner wins second prize at the James Dyson Award

Industrial designer Johannes Kastner, who graduated from the Kunsthochschule Kassel in 2023, was runner-up in the James Dyson Award 2024 with his SOCIAL PLAST project.

With his invention SOCIAL PLAST, industrial design graduate Kastner shows how the use of high-performance concrete (UHPC) can be used to produce more cost-effective and energy-efficient molds for the injection molding process. This process is particularly sustainable for smaller series from 500+ pieces. The jury was impressed by both the technological innovation potential and the approach of facilitating access to injection molding in developing regions.

Invention for non-violent detection and deterrence of wolves wins James Dyson Award 2024 in Germany

Pherofort, a system for non-violent wolf detection and deterrence developed at the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Applied Sciences, has been awarded the James Dyson Award 2024 in Germany.

The two runner-up projects are the +/- BRACE project developed at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences with a new approach to producing a customized elbow brace and SOCIAL PLAST, developed at the Kunsthochschule Kassel, which shows how the use of high-performance concrete can be used to produce more cost-effective and energy-efficient tool moulds for the injection moulding process.

The winning project Pherofort and the two runner-up projects will move on to the international phase of the James Dyson Award 2024 and have the chance to win worldwide publicity and prize money of 35,000 euros.

The 58 entries from Germany for the James Dyson Award 2024 were reviewed by a four-member jury consisting of Professor Tom Philipps, Professor of Industrial Design at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, Mélanie Voisin, Editor, VDI nachrichten, Jamie Pattison, Design Engineer, Dyson UK, and Ferry Radix, Senior Communications Manager, Dyson, who selected the winning project for the James Dyson Award at national level in Germany and two runner-up projects from the entries. In total, there were 1917 submissions for the James Dyson Award 2024 worldwide from 29 participating countries.

About the James Dyson Award
The international James Dyson Award has been presented to students and recent graduates in the fields of engineering and design since 2005. This year, the award will be presented in 29 countries. Since 2005, the James Dyson Award has supported more than 400 inventions worldwide. Around 70 percent of former winners go on to develop their inventions to market maturity. All submissions for the James Dyson Award 2024 are listed in the project gallery on the James Dyson Award website. The James Dyson Award is part of James Dyson's wider commitment to encouraging budding engineers and designers to apply their knowledge and discover new ways to improve lives through technology and is run by the James Dyson Foundation.
