Prof. Jan Peters sheds light on film education in Kassel

Contents and concepts of film education from the beginnings until today are the topic of the lecture by Prof. Jan Peters (Kunsthochschule Kassel) on Wednesday, June 14, at 6 p.m. in the Stadtmuseum.

Today, "film" as a main focus is one of the standards in teaching at art colleges and can be found in the various institutions under different names, such as "film", "film and video" or "film and moving image". However, its establishment was preceded by many disputes that continue to have an impact today. The lecture follows the traces into the past to make history and stories graspable for versatile and also critical observation.

The lecture is based on findings from ten years of work as a professor for "Film and Moving Image" at the Kunsthochschule Kassel. One example is the event notice for the screening of the film "Weekend" from 1969, on which the "Arbeitskreis Film & Fernsehen an der staatlichen Hochschule für bildende Künste Kassel Karlsaue" was named as the organizer. At that time, "Film and Television" was not yet part of the educational program, but was pursued on the student's own initiative.

Jan Peters, born in 1966, studied at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg and was a co-founder of the filmmaker collective "Abbildungszentrum" there. In addition to his long-term project "Ich bin...", Peters made numerous award-winning short and feature-length films, which were presented not only at film festivals and in cinemas, but also in exhibitions (for example at the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris). He also realized several radio plays for the editorial department Hörspiel und Medienkunst of the Bayerischer Rundfunk and in 2011 the theater performance "Ausflug nach Kohlhasenbrück" at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. In 2011/12 he was professor for film and video at the Merz Akademie in Stuttgart. Since the winter semester 2012 he is professor for film and moving image at the Kunsthochschule Kassel. From September 2013 to June 2014, he was also "Artist in Residence" at the European nuclear research center CERN in Geneva. In 2019, Jan Peters received the Honorary Award of the 36th Kassel Dokfest for particularly innovative achievements in film and art.

The lecture will take place in the context of the special exhibition "Kassel filmreif! Of Popcorn, Stars and Camera Moves" will take place.
