The "Dare to Design" exhibition at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt am Main brings together the most interesting works by graduates of German universities. They provide deep insights into their work and show promising solutions for tackling the major challenges of our time - climate change, political radicalization, gender equality. These are complex and sometimes simple, but all the more intelligent concepts with which the designers are shaping our future.
An expert jury has selected projects and concepts for "Dare to Design" from over 220 submitted works that reflect the range of innovative power of design talents - from circular product design for electronics and wind energy in urban spaces to medical solutions using 3D printing and robot-assisted craftsmanship.
Exhibitors (Kunsthochschule Kassel):
Lena Hellmann: "TAG - Table Tools"
The project "TAG - Tischwerkzeuge" (TAG - Table Tools) aims to promote the social community while eating together through its form and collective use. The tool, created in cooperation with Mono, aims to make eating together a conscious and enriching social experience that focuses equally on the community and individual needs. The partially formally protruding areas of the tools arouse curiosity and at the same time reveal functionalities to be discovered, such as the possibilities of individual portioning and the form of serving the food that can be designed with the tool. It offers tools to promote interaction, communication and the sharing of food during the meal. "TAG" aims to revitalize the social practice of eating and create a more conscious and mindful relationship with food and its company. It encourages users to be sociable and creative.
Michelle Pilz: "design as democracy - balancing theory and practice"
How does a design that is determined by democracy express itself and what does this have to do with the responsibility of designers? The thesis enters into the discussion about the concepts of democracy and design by characterizing the concept of "design as democracy" and examining it with the help of a participatory design event and interviews. It does not attempt to create a model for "design as democracy", but rather shows the field of tension in which its feasibility lies. She formulates an idea of democracy as design that encourages designers to reflect on design processes, enter into conflict and question design decisions. The work does not offer instructions, but rather stimulates the idea of a continuous process that also situates design for the future where it is effective: In society. The work was presented in the form of an interactive exhibition.
Florian Bremer: "making an inventory - participatory practice as critical activity"
The diploma thesis is the result of a participatory survey at the Kunsthochschule Kassel. Motivated by the attitude of making access to this institution more visible and questioning what, who and where the Kunsthochschule is. The assumption of the examination is that it is not something that can be described and exists "outside" of people or actions, but only arises where different things meet: animate and inanimate. The art academy is an activity, a performative execution, an action, an overlapping of many things that are not constant and constantly reconfigure and interpenetrate each other. It is the clash between the study regulations and the individual case examination, the help of the janitor, the lingering in the workroom, the anticipation of chips in the canteen queue, the chat with the administrative staff - the stumbling; the getting up and being together. The work is a snapshot of this.
