BODY AS ARCHIVE

Lecture/Artist Talk with James Gregory Atkinson in the class for Intermedial Photography and Time-based Media in the Artistic Field.

With a focus on his exhibition "6 Friedberg Chicago", the artist James Gregory Atkinson will talk about his work, his research processes and the handling of archives as well as the cooperation with scientists, dancers and musicians in a lecture and subsequent discussion with students.

James Gregory Atkinson is a visual artist. His multimedia work is a reaction to the extreme incompleteness of official archives. By drawing on the history of queer and Black people, editing and modifying it and bringing it into a dialog with the present, he creates alternative ways of encountering the past. His artistic practice aims to develop critical strategies in dealing with established historiographies and classical archives in order to actively expand the spectrum of memory culture with the help of transnational and intersectional narratives. He studied with Douglas Gordon at the Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main and received scholarships and artist residencies at the Villa Aurora, Los Angeles, the Jan Van Eyck Akademie, Maastricht and a studio grant from the Hessische Kulturstiftung in New York.
