Jan-Christian Warnecke has been director of the department of exhibitions at the Landesmuseum Württemberg in Stuttgart since 2004. From 2007 to 2015 he was founder and spokesperson of the working group on exhibition planning at the German Museum Association, where he was also a member of the board of directors from 2014 to 2018. He is internationally active in the IEO (International Exhibition Organizers) and with the European standardization guidelines CEN TC 346 “Conservation of Cultural Heritage.”
After completing his studies at the University of the Arts in Berlin with a diploma in Communications Management, his first professional stop was at the Felix Nussbaum Haus in Osnabrück, designed by Daniel Liebeskind. After this he was project manager at “Planet of Vision” in the theme park at EXPO2000 in Hannover. This was followed by a position at the Stuttgart office of Atelier Brückner.
Since he has been at the Landesmuseum Württemberg, numerous cultural-historical special exhibitions have been realized on topics of history and archaeology. Following extensive renovations of the building, which he oversaw as construction manager, the state museum’s collections were reconfigured on 4,000 m² and the children’s museum “Das Junge Shloss” [Young Castle] was established as a permanent exhibition. Other construction projects that he has overseen include the Kultur Lounge Dürnitz and the renovation of the Kunstgebäude in Stuttgart.
He has been a lecturer at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. Other lecture positions include those at the Institute of Cultural Management at the Ludwigsburg University of Education and in the “Strategic Design” department at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Schwäbisch Gmünd. In addition he has led post-graduate seminars at the Free University in Berlin and at the Bundesakademie in Wolfenbüttel.
He is editor and author of the book “Exhibition Planning: Collaboration between Museum and Designer,” av-edition, Stuttgart 2014).
