"Line Describing a Cone" by Anthony McCall, a classic of experimental film from 1973, is being shown in the exhibition hall of the Kunsthochschule Kassel (KhK). The film can also currently be seen at the Tate Gallery of Modern Art in London as part of the exhibition "Anthony McCall: Solid Light Works".
McCall is considered a pioneer of experimental film and is known for his "Solid Light" installations: A series he began in 1973 with the 16 mm film "Line Describing a Cone" (30 min.), in which a volumetric form of projected light slowly unfolds in three-dimensional space. The artist's works are located in the fields of sculpture, cinema and drawing: Sculpture, because the projected volumes have to be taken in and explored by moving viewers. Cinema, because the large-format objects are not static, but structured in such a way that they gradually shift and change over time. Drawing, because the origin of every installation is a two-dimensional line drawing. For the presentation of the silent film "Line Describing a Cone" in the exhibition hall of the Kunsthochschule, a screening copy was borrowed from the Parisian experimental film distributor Light Cone in the original 16mm analog film format of the film. The 30-minute silent film will be shown there as a loop.
Anthony McCall (*1946) lives and works in New York.
