Rebecca Stephany has been Professor for Graphic Design in the Visual Communication Program at Kunsthochschule Kassel since 2021.
Stephany studied Art and Graphic Design at the Offenbach University of Art and Design and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam and completed her MfA in Critical Studies at the Sandberg Instituut Amsterdam. She has received several scholarships including from the Rijksakademie Amsterdam (2010–2011) and as Designer-In-Residence at CSS Bard, New York (2013).
Working with print products, installations, video works and performances as well as in text production and curating, Stephany deliberately situates her polyphonic cultural practice between commissions and self-initiated projects. Feminist criticality fuels the undisciplined research instruments and visual articulations Stephany uses to explore and to question the presumed boundaries between “autonomous” and “applied” work.
From 2007 to 2016 Stephany worked as a lecturer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, in 2016 she was appointed Professor for Communication Design at the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe. In 2021 Stephany and graphic designer Anja Kaiser published the symposium and publication project “Glossary of Undisciplined Design.”
