Dr. Altner, Marvin

Teaching Staff for Special Tasks | Art History and Aesthetics

Marvin Altner studied art history, German studies, and psychology in Göttingen und Berlin, then completed his doctorate the Free University Berlin in 2002 with a thesis on “Hans Bellmer: ‘Die Spiele der Puppe’. Zu den Puppendarstellungen in der Bildenden Kunst von 1914–1938” under the direction of Prof. Dr. Thomas W. Gaehtgens.

This was followed with an associate position at Hamburger Kunsthalle in 2003-2004 and a position as acting director of the Division for Fine Art at the Hamburg Department of Culture. Since 2006 Marvin Altner has worked as a freelance curator, supervising exhibitions at the Hamburger Kunsthalle and at the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation, has published on the art of the 20th century and the present, and worked as a research associate at the German Historical Museum and at the Martin Gropius Bau.

Since 2011 he has worked as a visiting lecturer in the Department of Art History and Aesthetics and for UniTransfer at the University of Kassel, and since 2012 as a teacher for special tasks at the Kunsthochschule Kassel. Alongside his teaching work, he has held a position at the Andreas Felger Kulturstiftung in Berlin and published on topics in the field of the visual arts of the 20th century and the present.

Visual art from the 18th century to the present; history of art history; strategies of art education and institutional critique.
