Work, Entropy, and Patterns in Space and Time

Lecture by Thomas Fuhrmann-Lieker, Physical Chemistry of Nanomaterials at University of Kassel.

The Virtual Realities Class at the Kunsthochschule Kassel cordially invites you to the second lecture in an ongoing series of events organized in the framework of a new cooperation between the Kunsthochschule and other departments of the Universität Kassel.

How are patterns created in nature? Do the laws of physics allow creativity within the universe? In this talk you will experience how physical chemists see the world and its inherent beauty. We will discuss how patterns emerge despite of the inescapable law of entropy. After a short introduction into textbook thermodynamics, especially for artists, we will explore the self-organisation of various structures between order and disorder. Examples are taken from the world of nanoscience, such as the biomineralized cell walls of algae and crystals that we are working with.

The talk will be held in English.
