16.09.2022 – 16.09.2022

The Rice Barn and the Public Sphere

Dr. Sven Lütticken will give a lecture at Kunsthochschule Kassel at the Hörsaal (Nordbau).

This lecture is part of a program made by Mehrdimensionale Strategien Klasse for Erasmus + Blended Intensive Programs.

Sven Lütticken is an art historian, art critic, and author from the Netherlands. Lütticken is a senior lecturer at Leiden University’s Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, where he supervises Ph.D. projects in the PhDArts program, and he leads the research master's track Critical Studies in Art and Culture at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He publishes regularly in journals, magazines, and catalogs and is the author of 'Cultural Revolution: Aesthetic Practice after Autonomy' (Sternberg Press) and other books.

Using the traditional collective Indonesian rice barn or lumbung as a model, documenta fifteen was defined by ruangrupa as "a collective resource pot, operating under the logics of the commons." In the summer of 2022, the encounter between this networked, transnational commons and the German public sphere became a culture clash and a culture war. What does this tell us about the possibilities and limitations of attempts to practice art otherwise? And (how) can we engage meaningfully with this documenta beyond media controversies?

The lecture will be in English and it is open to all students and scholars of the Kunsthochschule Kassel interested in these questions and analyses.
