SHIFTS AND POSTPONEMENTS: On Exhibition Histories and Archives

documenta Institute Discourse #3 – Lecture by Rike Frank
April 11th 2018, 6.30 pm, auditorium of the Kunsthochschule, Menzelstr. 13–15, 34121 Kassel

The focus of my interest in this lecture is an approach to exhibition history that, to some extent, breaks with museum-led conventions of “historical reconstruction.” My starting points are Charlotte Posenenske’s demand for a “hard realism” (in her one’s own practice), a visit to the 3rd Bahia Bienniale two years after the closing of the exhibition, and Sarah Pierce’s considerations in “It’s Time Man, It Feels Imminent” (2009) and “The Community of the Exhibition” (2017). Against this background, I would like to discuss the various temporalities that permeate exhibition contexts, and their resultant effects. Furthermore, I will address the question of to what extent practicing exhibition history in particular can be productive in questioning existing logics of “framing,” “experiencing,” and “naming.”

Rike Frank is a curator and writer based in Berlin. From 2014–18 she taught exhibition history, theory, and practice in her role as Associate Professor of Exhibition Studies at the Academy of Fine Art of the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO). She was previously responsible for the programming of the exhibition space at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB); she was also a member of the programming team of the European Kunsthalle, project leader of documenta 12, and curator at the Secession in Vienna. From 2016–17 she planned the conference series “Of(f) Our Times: The Aftermath of the Ephemeral and other Curatorial Anachronics” together with Beatrice von Bismarck, focusing on alternative approaches to dealing with exhibition history. In addition, she is (co-)editor and author of numerous publications including, among others, “Textiles: Open Letter” (2015), “Timing – On the Temporal Dimension of Exhibiting” (2014), and artist monographs such as “Ane Hjort Guttu: Writings, Conversations, Scripts” (2018), “Sketches of Universal History: Compiled from Several Authors by Sarah Pierce” (2013), and “Constanze Ruhm: Coming Attractions” (2012).

“documenta Institute Discourse” invites to think together with international speakers about archives, research and education. This can lead to imaginations about unexpected functions, strategies, and ways of acting for archives, research and education institutions. The public program is a collaboration between the documenta professor at the Kunsthochschule Kassel and the documenta archive. It is part of the process of establishing a new documenta Institute in Kassel.

Verschiebungen: Über Ausstellungsgeschichte(n) und Archive

documenta Institute Discourse #3 – Vortrag von Rike Frank
11. April 2018, 18.30 Uhr, Hörsaal der Kunsthochschule, Menzelstr. 13–15, 34121 Kassel

Bahia Biennale zwei Jahren nach dem Ende der Ausstellung und Sarah Pierce’s Überlegungen in „It’s Time Man, It Feels Imminent“ (2009) und „The Community of the Exhibition“ (2017).

2016–17 konzipierte sie zusammen mit Beatrice von Bismarck die Konferenzreihe „Of(f) Our Times: The Aftermath of the Ephemeral and other Curatorial Anachronics” zu alternativen Ansätzen eines Umgangs mit Ausstellungsgeschichte. „Textiles: Open Letter“ (2015) und „Timing –  On the Temporal Dimension of Exhibiting“ (2014), sowie Monographien von KünstlerInnen u.a. „Ane Hjort Guttu. Writings, Conversations, Scripts“ (2018), „Sketches of Universal History: Compiled from Several Authors by Sarah Pierce“ (2013) und „Constanze Ruhm: Coming Attractions“ (2012).
