Designing Textile Products

The Designing Textile Products programme teaches design skills in the use of materials and techniques for developing textile products and their functional and aesthetic aspects, particularly in a spatial context. Work is primarily project-based. The necessary technical fundamentals are also taught in the workshops.

Through research and practical work, students develop their own approaches to problem-solving, thereby gaining development and decision-making skills that lead to independent problem-solving. The aim is to experiment with materials, question conventions, but also rediscover traditions and develop them further in a playful manner.

The term "textile products" is expressly not reduced to decorative or "beautifully embellished flat goods", but is understood as a multi-layered, interdisciplinary field of design. Textile design encompasses spatial, functional, technical and social dimensions and is brought to life through concrete tasks, interdisciplinary projects and teamwork.

An essential component of the study programme is practical teaching, which is reflected in regular semester projects with external partners. These include collaborations with renowned companies and museums, such as the internationally renowned furniture manufacturer Thonet, and a collaboration in the field of seating furniture with Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum, one of the largest design museums in the world. In addition, there are local collaborations, including with the Kassel transport company and the BG Göttingen basketball team.

These projects enable students to test their design concepts in real-world contexts, gain insights into professional work and production processes, and gain early experience at the interface between design, implementation and the public.
