Art in a Contemporary Context
How might theory rework the terms of artistic practice by opening different angles of approach? What are the concerns and intersections that art and theory come to share, and how are these shaped by histories of power, exclusion, and resistance? The class focuses on discourse-oriented and research-based practices. It is conceived as a space where artistic practice becomes a way of staying with the present’s unresolved pressures rather than escaping them. Students are invited into a sustained engagement with the affective and political textures that shape how images, voices, and bodies come into relation. Through dialogue, collaboration, and reflection, students develop a sensitivity to the conditions under which their work emerges, cultivating practices that can both interrogate and reimagine the social worlds they inhabit.
