How can leftovers become starting points for sustainable design? Prof. Susanne Ritzmann, Katharina Mludek and Fabienne Rako from the Sustainable Product Design study programme at the Kassel Art Academy explore this question in their latest article ‘Waste equals Food? Leftovers as a starting point for sustainability in design’.
The article examines the significance of circular metaphors such as recycling, the circular economy and the circular economy model within the sustainability-oriented design discourse, and explores the notions of resources, value and design associated with them. Based on the idea that so-called waste does not mark the end of a process but can open up new possibilities, the article considers leftovers as creative and social starting points for sustainable design approaches.
The article has been published in the anthology “SDG 12: Sustainable Consumption and Production” and is available free of charge online via university libraries or with a KARLA account.
