Annual Exhibition of the Graduate School for Moving Images (GBB).
Eyewitnesses recount pandemics, natural disasters, and failed harvests during the Little Ice Age in 16th- and 17th-century Europe. In the archives of Berlin’s Museum of Natural History, traces reveal the violence of an excavation that, in 1913, brought a dinosaur skeleton from what was then the colony of German East Africa to the German Empire. In 2026, a young woman in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, recalls places from her childhood that have disappeared. Through fragmented poems, diary entries, and streams of thought, (inner) voices speak of queer realities, desire, fear of loss, and withdrawal. And in a near future shaped by the advanced Capitalocene, a moth wanders through devastated landscapes in search of food.
Spanning roughly 500 years, the works in this exhibition explore different forms of loss. “In the Event of Loss” is a phrase commonly found in insurance contracts, referring to a claim that calls for repair, replacement, or financial compensation. At the center of the exhibition is the question of what happens when things disappear that cannot be addressed within such a bureaucratic logic. Here, In the Event of Loss refers to the loss of entire ecosystems and species, of relationships, stability, and control.
Since 2020 the Kunsthochschule Kassel has been offering a post-graduate research programme based on artistic and design-oriented practice with the Graduate School for Moving Images (GBB). Grounded in a comprehensive understanding of moving image as a field spanning across games, animation, video, new media, and film, the GBB brings together filmmakers, artists, and designers to develop their individual research projects over the course of four semesters. In the Event of Loss is the title of this year’s annual exhibition. As part of the GBB_edits series, it presents the participants’ projects while also serving as the final presentation of those completing the two-year programme.
On display are works by Annkathrin Kluss, Chuhui Luo, Elio Purfürst, Leonard Volkmer, and Max Hilsamer.
