Peggy Buth studied photography and fine arts at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (graduated 2002) and was a fellow at the Jan van Eyck Academy Maastricht, Netherlands (2003-2005).

She has received research and working grants in Germany, the USA, France, and Belgium.
In 2016 she was named Professor for Media Art at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig. This was followed in 2020 with an appointment as professor at the Department of Photography in the Visual Communications Program at the Kunsthochschule Kassel.
The focal points of her artistic development and research at the Department of Photography are the official technological functions of media such as photography, archives, video, television, internet, smartphones, and computers. Examinations of hybrid photographic processes or their media conditions and the way in which media such as photography, video, and internet produce relations of self and value.
