On 1 October 2026, Prof. Dr Leonie Hunter will take up the Chair of Philosophy (specialising in Aesthetics and Art Theory) at the Kunsthochschule Kassel.
Leonie Hunter studied political theory, specialising in aesthetics, in Zurich, Frankfurt and New York. In 2022, she was awarded a PhD in philosophy from Goethe University and the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt am Main. This was followed by academic posts at, amongst others, the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, Justus Liebig University in Giessen, the Istituto Svizzero in Rome, Princeton University and the University of Basel. Most recently, she was a visiting lecturer in the Chair of Philosophy and Aesthetics at the Offenbach University of Art and Design.
In her research and teaching, she combines philosophy, aesthetics and political theory. Her current research project, ‘Technologies of Social Abstraction’, examines the relationship between aesthetic, social and technological abstraction and explores the emancipatory potential of aesthetic practices in the context of contemporary technological and social changes.
Her most recent publications include The Drama in Politics: Hegel’s Aesthetics as a Treatise on Democratic Theory (2023) and Tragic Liberalism (2024).
