Award for independent publishing – Martin Schmitz is also in charge of the Lucius & Annemarie Burckhardt Honorary Professorship at the Kunsthochschule.
Martin Schmitz Verlag has been awarded the 2026 German Publishing Prize. It is one of 85 publishers to be honoured for their publishing work. A total of 279 publishers had applied for the prize. Wolfram Weimer, Minister of State for Culture, announced the winners on 25 September 2026.
Through the German Publishing Prize, the Federal Government recognises the quality and diversity of Germany’s independent publishing landscape. The jury’s key criteria include a compelling publishing programme, the quality of the publishing work, the aesthetic design of the books and a special commitment to culture.
The German Publishing Prize will be awarded for the eighth time in 2026. The prize categories will be announced at the awards ceremony on 9 October 2026 as part of the Frankfurt Book Fair.
