On 20 July 2026, extensive refurbishment and renovation work began at the Kassel Art Academy. Work on the Atrium building and adjacent areas is scheduled to last for around one year. The focus of the work is on improving fire safety, renovating the historic building structure and reorganising the student workshops.

Fire safety measures in the Atrium Building
A key part of the refurbishment is the implementation of extensive fire safety measures. Among other things, this involves creating new cable routes and laying cables in corridors and adjoining rooms.

Refurbishment of the corridors in the Atrium Building
Preparations for the corridor refurbishment are beginning in parallel. The corridor areas will be fitted with new ceilings and new ceiling lighting. In addition, the historic lockers will be refurbished.

Due to a fire safety requirement, a new escape route is being created between the colonnade and the Atrium Building.

Reorganisation of the spatial layout and consolidation of the workshops
Another key focus of the works is the reorganisation of the student workshops. The Book and Paper, Typography, Printing, Lithography and Intaglio Printing sections will be brought together in a single space.

To provide the contractors with sufficient storage space for materials and tools, the car park in front of the ceramics workshop will be temporarily closed from 20 July 2026.

The art college’s canteen will also be closed from 3 August up to and including 4 September 2026, as the dishwashing area is being refurbished. As a temporary measure, a vending machine will be set up next to the Aufwerter in front of the canteen, where snacks and drinks will continue to be available. From 7 September 2026, the canteen will be open again as usual for students and staff.

Kunsthochschule Kassel asks all members of the university community and visitors for their understanding regarding any potential restrictions during the refurbishment and renovation work.
