The Film and Moving Image program (Kunsthochschule Kassel), in collaboration with Filmladen Kassel e.V., presents: Unter Kontrolle by Volker Sattel.

The documentary (Germany, 2011, 98 minutes) is subtitled “An Archaeology of Nuclear Power”. It takes stock of a technology that many once hailed as pioneering. Display boards, control panels, models, plans – control rooms, machine halls, offices, laboratories – orderly nuclear power stations in the tidy German countryside – clouds of steam against a blue sky, concrete on a green meadow. Filmed on 35mm and in Cinemascope. Unter Kontrolle does not report in a journalistic style, but rather strings together images and sounds with great sobriety and aesthetic rigour to depict the status quo of nuclear power in Germany. The film highlights the contradiction between a highly complex, dangerous technology and the promise made by its operators that it is manageable, that it is: under control. Deadly dry and highly gripping.
