Exhibiting and researching exhibition practices.

Today, exhibitions are an ubiquitous format through which themes and artefacts are put up for discussion. But what does the act of exhibiting itself mean – as a process, as a practice, as a subject of research? In an interview with Felix Vogel, which forms part of this exhibition, he states that he is not interested in a definition of the exhibition, but in the act of exhibiting itself. This approach also forms the starting point for this exhibition project.

It is intended as an active contribution to an emerging cluster for exhibition studies in Kassel. Since the founding of the documenta Institute, the field of exhibition studies has been gaining in significance and momentum. Not least, the construction of this exhibition hall and the development of its own exhibition programme, as a free space for testing and experimentation, are contributing significantly to this development.

At the heart of the presentation are new works by students from various specialisms within the Fine Art degree programme, which have been developed specifically on the theme of exhibiting. Two historical works complement the new pieces: Marcel Duchamp’s legendary *Boîte-en-valise* and selected videos from Helke Bayrle’s series *Portikus under construction*.

The curatorial contributions include the aforementioned interview with Felix Vogel on his perspective on exhibiting, a historical timeline of various attempts to compile collections of seminal exhibitions, and further visual commentaries on exhibiting.
