Hobby horsing is a competitive sport in which participants take on the roles of both rider and horse simultaneously to re-enact disciplines such as show jumping or dressage. In Romina Abate’s photographic series, the hobby horse serves as a prop, a mount and a symbol all at once. The jump, as a state of transformation between gravity and detachment, becomes a moment of transition: whoever leaps towards freedom leaves the safety of the ground behind, overcomes obstacles and, for a brief, suspended moment, is exposed to their own vulnerability.

Romina Abate studied Fine Art at the Kassel Art Academy and is currently an artistic assistant in the ‘Art in a Contemporary Context’ class. She has received numerous grants for her artistic work. Most recently, she took part in the mentoring programme of the Kunststiftung NRW and was a recipient of the HAP grant from the HMWK and basis e.V. Frankfurt. She lives and works between Kassel and North Rhine-Westphalia.
