The nationwide German Design Graduates initiative showcases outstanding final-year projects from German design education programmes. It supports graduates as they enter the profession and connects them with key players from the worlds of business and culture. German Design Graduates is part of the German Design Council Foundation.

Around 70 projects from 28 German universities were selected for the exhibition at ‘Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum’. On display is a curated selection spanning product and industrial design, communication and digital design, as well as textile and fashion design. In their diversity, the works highlight key contemporary issues – and illustrate the methods through which a new generation of designers is seeking answers. How can waste materials be transformed into new materials? How can digital technologies be put to good use? How can design convey knowledge, enable social participation or shape new forms of coexistence?

Contributions from Kunsthochschule Kassel
The Kunsthochschule Kassel is represented in this year’s selection of German Design Graduates with two final-year projects. The selected projects offer different perspectives on how the remit of design is currently expanding:

Philip Scholz – “NEST, private electricity storage in the context of the energy transition”
Compact battery storage makes dynamic electricity tariffs viable even in homes. The circular display shows charging phases, consumption and favourable time slots. This makes it clear how electricity prices and grid load interact throughout the day.

Zion Vic Junge – “black aesthetics: decentering white aesthetics”
Autoethnographic research and archival research into Black designers andartists challenge the supposed universality of Western design norms. A publication and individually crafted aluminium stools translate this critique into a distinct visual language.
