A train journey through Italy – slow, gentle, summery. From Milan to Venice, via Rome, Lecce and Bari. In time with the rhythm of the train, the film takes its time at every stop. Static images blend with fleeting views through the windows, an alternation between waking and sleeping.
The writer Anna Dubosc and the filmmaker Gustavo de Mattos Jahn, as a travelling couple, have embarked on the adventure of making a film together. It becomes a journey through the distance that separates them, despite their shared path. Between the words Anna works with and the images Gustavo works with, there are the same fragile bridges and deep chasms that can exist between two people – or even between two moments in the life of one and the same person.
The film takes its structure from Anna’s art, organised into poems or stories that could just as easily be entries in a private diary or chapters of a novel. From Gustavo, it adopts his tender approach to Anna’s art – that lesson ‘à la Marguerite Duras’ which teaches that images often prevent us from hearing the text fully, and that one needs quiet, soft, even blurred images to allow the words to come through. At a certain point, we begin to see through the writer’s eyes and hear the filmmaker’s voice. The grain of the 16mm film, which Anna initially shied away from, ultimately suits the tone and the sparse economy of that summer – a season consisting of modest dinners of wine, bread and sardines. For his part, Gustavo – drawing on Jane Sautière – asks about an elusive “ideal location for the subjective camera: the dream in which filmmaker and viewer merge into one and the same place. (Manuel Asín)
