Kassel & Queer:topias

by Richard Cochran

Queer /kwîr/ originating from Middle Low German meaning "oblique or off-centered" and Topia /tópia/ coming from Greek "field or landscape". The search for queertopias in Kassel seems to still hold true to these older meanings. A landscape that often may feel oblique yet perhaps an off-centered field of vision is exactly what a place like Kassel needs.

Queertopia is an ongoing investigation of the voices and views, wants and needs, of the LGBTQIA+ communities in Kassel. Through recorded interviews played back through the entire space, and snap shot photos plastered along the walls, the space will reflect Kassel through our perspectives.

Like mapping out a detective mystery, I would like to open a space where my research will be literally written on the walls investigating Kassel's Queer (or maybe not so queer) landscapes. Although it is a space for people to listen and reflect on queer voices, there will be places and spaces to add to your own knowledge and experiences.
