Pohl, Marie

Professorship for Illustration and Comics

Marie Pohl, who publishes under the pseudonym Marijpol, works at the intersection of comics, illustration, and design. Her visual narratives combine social questions with speculative fiction – using visual languages that shift between analog drawing and digital collage.

One focus of her work is using drawing to reflect on body images and gender roles as well as developing visual narrative formats between book, installation, and digital image spaces. She studied Visual Communication at the HFKB and illustration at the HAW Hamburg.

Since 2011 she has been publishing graphic novels, including Hort (Edition Moderne, 2022) – a story about caretaking, bodies, and alternative forms of family. The French version was nominated for the official selection at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. Her works have been shown at the Centre Pompidou, the Kunsthaus Göttingen, and at Fumetto Luzern, among others.

Before taking the position at the Kunsthochschule Kassel in the summer semester of 2025, she taught at the HAW Hamburg, the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel, the HfG Karlsruhe, and the Bauhaus University Weimar.
