Contemporary Afrofuturism and Black Speculative Art - An Introduction by Natasha A. Kelly

Dr. Natasha A. Kelly is taking the 150th birthday of W.E.B. Du Bois - the Black intellectual and cosmopolitan - as a starting point to give an introduction into contemporary Afrofuturism and Black speculative art.

Not many people in Germany know that starting in 1892 Du Bois was a research fellow at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-University, today’s Humboldt-University in Berlin, and that many of his ideas arose during this period. The sociologist and activist dedicated his life to the political struggle against racism. His first science-fiction short story “The Comet” (1920), which portrays a Black man as the last survivor of humanity, makes clear which role Du Bois played in the emergence of “Afrofuturism”. Beginning with Du Bois, Dr. Natasha A. Kelly will build a bridge to today’s takes on Afrofuturism and Black speculative art.

Natasha A. Kellyhttp://natashaakelly.com has a PhD in Communication Studies and Sociology with a research focus on colonialism and feminism. Born in the UK and bred in Germany the author, curator, lecturer filmmaker and artistic director has taught at numerous universities in Germany and Austria.

Her award-winning debut film »Milli’s Awakening« (2018) was commissioned by the 10th Berlin Biennale and screened in national and international settings. Her latest book is a collection of German translations of the foundational Black Feminists (from Sojourner Truth to Kimberlé Crenshaw) and marks the first in a new series of Black Feminist Readers.
