Date of hire:

as soon as possible

Vacancy number:37561

We are looking for a person with an established and outstanding record in art or design to take over the direction of the Games class in the department of Visual Communication at the Kunsthochschule Kassel. The candidate must prove the quality of their artistic/design work in the form of a recognized body of work as well as national or international success, such as awards and participation in international festivals and/or exhibitions.

This professorship covers the entire scope of teaching in the field of Games, in part sharing the content of teaching with other sections in the department of Visual Communication such as Animation, Film, New Media, Sound, etc. The teaching should deal with the creation of 2D/3D/4D real-time art, that is, with video game engines, with VR displays, as well as with installation and performance processes. The course should convey in-depth knowledge in computer-assisted 3D modeling, the art of storytelling, and the shaping of virtual realities. The candidate should be able to demonstrate an affirmative and narrative focus on Games in his or her own work, as well as a relation to the discussion of their political, social, technological, or theoretical dimensions. The goal of teaching is to empower students to operate on the games market, as well as in other situations, from an independent artistic position. Experience in organizing or taking part in commercial and/or independent events or festivals therefore needs to be demonstrated. The candidate should possess a critical approach that moves between the parameters of art, design, and the market, and that encourages students to think and act creatively and reflectively.

The application must include a teaching and working concept (max. 2 pages) demonstrating the candidate’s pedagogical approaches as well as reflections on his or her cooperative and cross-departmental work in teaching. The teaching concept should present how the breadth of the profile and the content defined in it will be communicated in the teaching process. Ability to conduct teaching in German and English must be demonstrated, and previous teaching experience in higher education must be documented. Participation in academic self-management is one of the duties of the position.

The current teaching load of the professorship is 18 semester hour per week (according to LVerpflV HE, the Hessian Ordinance on Teaching Duties), which can be fulfilled in Visual Communication by supervising a class, in this case the Games class.

The employment requirements according to §§ 67, 68 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) apply here. Experience in academic self-management is desirable. Evidence must be provided of particular aptitude for artistic work as well as special artistic achievements during several years of successful employment with the duties of a professorship, as well as the required pedagogical aptitude.
